Moving Hex Signs
‘Can the Artist Survive?’
Moving Hex Signs exhibited @ Grandview Heights Public Library
December 1-31st 2023
This series of artworks pairs articles and advertisements from American Artist Magazine circa 1970-1979 with vibrant geometric compositions, reminiscent of the Barn Quilts/Hex Signs that are fixtures in rural America. These static compositions are paired with a QR Code that links to an animated version of each artwork.
This collection of static and moving images is meant to call attention to the ways in which professional artists were valued decades ago. They also reference a dated catalogue of resources and ideas that, while mostly obsolete, convey a hopeful tenor and an overarching respect for artist communities. Color and movement are used to bring life back into the yellowing pages and address their lack of modernity, while still maintaining the cheerful tone of the publication.
This project was inspired by a series of Color Theory exercises developed for my Flat and Solid Design class at Marietta College throughout the Spring of 2023.
