Moving Hex Signs
‘Can the Artist Survive?’
Moving Hex Signs exhibited @ Grandview Heights Public Library
December 1-31st 2023
This series pairs articles and advertisements from American Artist Magazine (1970-1979) with vibrant, geometric compositions inspired by the Barn Quilts and Hex Signs of rural America. These static, archival images are complemented by QR codes that link to animated versions of each artwork, merging traditional and digital forms of expression.
Through this combination of still and moving images, the work invites reflection on the shifting value of professional artists over the past several decades. The articles and advertisements, while largely obsolete today, convey a hopeful and respectful view of artist communities from a bygone era. By revitalizing these yellowing pages with color and movement, I aim to both honor their cheerful optimism and address their anachronistic qualities—breathing new life into a dated resource while highlighting its historical context.
This project draws inspiration from Color Theory exercises developed while teaching Flat and Solid Design class at Marietta College in the Spring of 2023.
